General Meeting and Pool Party!

The Annual 4th of July Pool Party and potluck barbecue will be held on June 24, 2000, at the home of Kellie Hendley, in Bowie, Maryland. In addition to the usual fun and food, we will be having a short business meeting to discuss the Maryland Renaissance Festival contract, accept new members, promote old members, determine the unit budget and upcoming purchases, and set the schedule for the rest of the year. Your participation is needed to decide our unit's direction; whether you are a probationary or a full member, your ideas count! Please plan to attend The party will begin at noon, and the meeting will take place from 2:00 - 4:00 pm. The Peterkas will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, and condiments. Please bring salads, desserts, chips, or dips, and your own drinks. Also bring proper pool side attire and accouterments (squirt guns, beach balls, personal flotation devices, etc.).

$$$ Dues OVER Due! $$$

Unit dues were officially late as of May 1. Unit dues are a very reasonable $20.00 for individuals and $30.00 for families, with newsletter subscriptions only costing $5.00. If you are not certain whether you paid your dues this year or not, please contact Drew immediately to find out and make arrangements to pay, if necessary. The date to the right of your name on the Landskonnections mailing label signifies what date your dues are paid through, as it has been reported to the Landskonnections staff. The unit's fiscal calendar runs from April 1 to March 31, so if it reads "4/01", your dues are paid for this year. If it reads "4/00", then your dues have NOT been paid for the year 2000. and if it reads an earlier date, for example "4/98", then you haven't paid your dues since 1997, and the unit has been carrying you for three years. Please note that the Landskonnections mailing department may not have received the latest information from the treasurer, and any corrections should be discussed with both. If your dues are still in arrears by June 24, you will be dropped from the membership rolls, and this will be the last newsletter you receive. We will miss you horribly, you will miss us horribly, and you will kick yourself for not paying timely when you have to reapply and go through your probationary period all over again. Avoid this tragedy, pay your dues now! (Newsletter subscriptions only are on a slightly different schedule - check your mailing label for expiration date).

Maryland Renaissance Festival

We have once again been offered a contract to perform at the Maryland Renaissance Festival, as guards for King Henry VIII. As usual, the contract offer requires us to supply two guards per day for the court and we are invited us to set up a living history encampment if we wish. The unit will vote on whether to accept the contract at the Business Meeting/Pool Party on June 24 (see related Article). We will also have a sign up sheet for each of the festival weekends. If we don't get coverage of at least two guards per weekend, then we cannot accept the contract, even if the voting approves it's acceptance. Please be realistic, and sign up only for the days you know you can work. It does us no good to accept the contract and then have to forfeit a day's pay because only one guard showed up. We will also vote on the disposition of the money earned, and whether or not to set up an encampment.

This year's festival begins August 26, and runs through October 22. The festival year is 1527, Henry and Anne Boleyn have become quite an item, and the burning question in court is "Hmm, I wonder how long THIS one will last?" Viscount and Viscountess Bletchley have skipped town to avoid paying for hosting the court, and Revel Grove's Former Mayor, Collier Remington has returned, only to find his life made miserable by a new regional magistrate.

Alternate Member Recruitment Drive

The newest member of the unit announced his intention to join with a confused scream 1:37 am on April 5, 2000. Kenneth Raymond Peterka, at 8 lbs, 4.5 ounces and 20 1/4 inches, was born via cesarean delivery at Holy Cross Hospital, to proud parents Larry and Paula. Congratulations, and welcome, Kenneth - we'll look for you in the pikeline in 2016!

New Unit Event - Cathanar Collegium

The SCA Barony of Cathanar is hosting a Coastal Champions Tourney and Collegium, run by Simon Spalding and Sara Kirtland, to which the unit has been invited. Much like the Pennsylvania Musterung events of years past, we have been invited to set up a living history encampment and teach classes.

This event will take place on June 17, 2000, in historic New Bern, North Carolina. The unit voted to accept this invitation and participate in the event at the annual business meeting.

At present, plans are to leave as early as possible on Friday, preferably by 10:00 am. There is no overnight camping on site, so we will set up at 8:00 am on Saturday, as soon as it opens. There will be overnight camping for us at Simon and Sara's place, which is very close to the site. They have offered us couches and floor space, or said that we can set up a tent in their 1/2 acre yard. We should be able to break down early on Sunday, and get back at a somewhat reasonable time. The driving time is estimated to be about 8 hours, in addition to any stops. Larry figures probably about 10 hours with baby and people stops.

At press time, information about event fees and meal plans was unavailable. A nominal cost for our meal plan will be set, if food is not provided. Simon and Sara are very excited about having us come down, since this is a 16th Century-themed event.

Classes scheduled include Finger Weaving, 16th-Century Rapier Skills, Making Glass Beads, The Elizabethan Military, Basic SCA Dance, Period Cookery, 16th c. German Chess Variants, Singing Elizabethan Rounds, Elementary Pike Drill, Making a Coif or Flat Cap, Candle Making, Leather Tooling, Soap Making, Landsknecht Weapons and Tactics, Landsknecht Clothing, and a Lecture on Colonial Navigation by Simon Spalding at the Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens.

Teachers include Simon and Sara, local SCA members, and Gardiner's Company, Trayn'd Bandes of London, an Elizabethan reenactment unit.

Please contact Paula as soon as possible if you would like to attend this event, so she may provide Simon and Sara with a group headcount, as well as plan logistics for us. Please remember that we voted to take part in this event, and to teach classes. We have promised to teach classes on period clothing and on battle tactics. Come support the unit and our goals of furthering education about the 16th Century!

Landsknecht Thursdays Return

Now that they have had time to adjust a bit to new parenthood, Larry and Paula will again host an Open House every Thursday for social studies, costuming, character work, and other various history discussions, starting on June 29.

Landsknechting will begin at 7:00 pm and end at 9:00 pm. Sodas will be available, snacks may or may not be available, depending on the nature of the topic covered, and dinner will not be served, since it takes too much time away from the discussions. Contributions of drinks or munchies are always appreciated, but not required. Please come by!
