July 4th Parade And Pool Party
Takoma Park's Independence Day Parade has asked us to return yet again to add our colorful clothes and weapons to it's loud, rowdy, and often weird holiday celebration.
The two hour parade will take place on Saturday, July 4. We must be in place at 9:00 am on Boyd St. between Carrol and Jackson, in Takoma Park. We are in Division Five (V) this year, and our Division Director is Steve Breckbill. Step off is at 10:00 am. Trophies will be awarded in a number of categories, and this parade offers a prize of $100.00 for first place in the costumed group category. Free cold drinks will be provided at the end of the parade, and, of course, the campfollowers will carry water. This is a very big parade, and is always a great deal of fun to march in, even with fire trucks' sirens behind us, and horse groups in front of us! It is not too late to sign up for this event; please call Paula, so we know how many weapons to bring.
After the parade, we will retreat to Kellie Hendley's house. She has graciously offered her home and swimming pool for a potluck barbeque. The Captain will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, and condiments. Please bring salads, desserts, chips, or dips, and your own drinks. Also bring proper pool side attire and accouterments (squirt guns, beach balls, personal flotation devices, etc.).
The unit has voted to accept the contract to perform at the Maryland Renaissance Festival as guards for King Henry VIII and his court. We will be allowed to set up a living history encampment, and must provide two guards for the court. Soldiers and campfollowers will be able to rotate from guard shifts to camp shifts, and a schedule will be set. The unit also voted to provide a small stipend to each member who works a full day, to offset gas and other expenses, and provide some sort of meal/snack. At press time, the kitchen staff was discussing the merits of providing light snacks (bread, sausage, cheese, etc.) all day long vs. setting out a main meal at a certain time each day. The Landskonnections will provide information on this as it develops. Camping will be available for members who live more than 45 miles from the site. Camping passes will be $10.00 for the run, plus a campsite deposit fee of probably $70.00. Larry and Paula will allow german camping at their house as well (although they may ask for contributions towards food, sodas, and hot water!). If you wish to camp in either place, please contact one of the unit officers.
Vive le Drunken Alpine Truffles!
We have returned victorious from the Landsknecht Musterung, hosted by the SCA Shire of Eisenthal and Der Sonnen Von Krieg at the Ukrainian Homestead in Lehighton, Pennsylvania. We survived the heat, the humidity, the bugs, and the beer, and managed to not disrupt the lives of those around us too badly.
Our hosts were glad we came, and did their best to make us feel welcome throughout the weekend. We received the following from Paul Zona via E-mail on Tuesday: "Just a few lines to say "Thank you" for all your efforts to help make Landsknecht Musterung such a success. Everyone still looks on you and your crew with a degree of awe, seeing the adherence to period kits and materials, and the personae development."
We taught classes in Landsknecht Clothing, German Camp Cooking, and Pike Drill, and would have happily taught Battle Strategy and Tactics, had anyone bothered to show up for the class!
Our unit fielded sixteen people for this event: Mike Amos, Justin Briley, Charlie Jones, Drew Jones, Barbara Kriner, Bob Kriner, Joseph Kriner, Rich Manzano, Elizabeth Partenheimer, Janice Partenheimer, Ray Partenheimer, Susan Partenheimer, Larry Peterka, Paula Peterka Rob Slater, and Linda Taggart. This was the first event with us for Rich and Susan (welcome aboard!), and the first in a long time for Rob (welcome back!). Everyone had a good time, despite the heat, and it provided a good shakedown for the upcoming hot weather season.
A song which needs very little introduction, we are happy to present:
