Landskonnections Publication Resumes after Four Month Hiatus
Yeah, well, I've been busy!!! It says right up there on the masthead "Published monthly, or whenever I get around to it." You try to move, unpack, sew hats for two festivals, make four sets of court clothes, four codpieces, three pairs of hose, work nine weekends of the Renaissance Festival, bury a ferret, travel four weeks to four different cities, host relatives from out of state for three weeks, and still put out a newsletter! If you can, come see me, I have a job to offer you. . . .
The next Official Unit Meeting will take place on Sunday, December 7 ("a date that will live in infamy"), at the new home of the Peterka's at 2:00 pm. We have a great many things to discuss. Tentative agenda items include a Maryland Festival post-mortem, promotion of probationary members to full members, announcement of workshop and event schedules for the 1998 season, and disposition of monies earned.
Additionally, the unit's Annual meeting will be held on January 11, 1998, also at the new home of the Peterka's, at 12:00 pm.. Yes, we realize that's two meetings in two months, but as the Captain put it during a recent interview "Oh, Well!".
Open House Thursdays and Landsknecht Sundays
Keep that third Sunday of the month open for Landsknecht Sundays, to commune with your fellow Landsknechts in a serene, park-like setting, to practice drill and learn new skills, and to improve your all-around well-being! The next Sunday event will be at 1:00 pm December 21, and will concentrate on period cooking and techniques. We will hold this at the Peterka's house, possibly in their backyard. We will move the sites every month, so if you know of a suitable park in your area where the unit will have room to drill and attract attention, call one of the unit commanders to let them know.
In addition to the Sunday drills, Larry and Paula will continue hosting Thursdays Landsknechts-at-Home days. Their house will be open from 6:00-ish pm until they throw you out, for working on costumes, characterization, language, watching movies, or just playing Darts, Magic the Addiction, or Battletech. At least one Thursday a month will be reserved for hand sewing. Dinner will usually be provided, because, hey, they've gotta eat too, but contributions of food, beverages, munchies or even pizza are always welcome.
We received a letter from Private Taggart, who is currently at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri (also known as Fort Lost-in-the-Woods-Misery), undergoing basic training. He was just about to leave for his first bivouac, and was complaining about the cold snap that arrived just in time for his first "camping event". He also said that the Army doesn't quite compare to Landsknechts, and that he misses us all. He promises to write everyone soon, and would love a letter or postcard from any of us.
Make sure you put "#3" on the back of the envelope, so that it gets to him, because he's in the third platoon.

As the Winter Holiday Season approaches fast upon us, the Landskonnections staff would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you and yours the happiest and safest of Thanksgivings, Hannukahs, Kwanzas, Christmases, Solstices, Yules, and New Years. (If we've missed anything, don't tell us!)
On Saturday, January 10, 1998, the Peterkas will once again host their annual German Post-Christmas-Post-12th-Night-One-Last-Holiday-Season Party . There'll be lots of food, lots of room, lots of friends, lots of fun, lots of food, and this year, a fireplace! Come roam through the Peterka's glorious new digs, ten rooms filled with holiday festivity (eleven if you count the one over the garage, but that's mostly filled with stuff in storage). p> This year's party will start at 7:30 pm, and will finish whenever the last Landsknecht falls asleep. Conveniently, the unit's Annual Meeting is scheduled for the next day, and there is plenty of space for any who wish to stay over. A Buffet dinner will be served, as well as various assorted snacks and munchies, and both diet and regular drinks will be provided. Contributions of food and beverages are not necessary, but would never be turned down. All members of the unit are invited to attend, and may bring a guest if they wish. Dress is whatever-you-care-to-wear. This is the Peterka's way of thanking everyone for working so hard during the year, and making the unit such an enjoyable place to be. Please RSVP.
On November 2, 1997, Carolyn Spedden and Mike Fields became the proud parents of William Severn Fields. (Okay, they've actually been his proud parents for eight months, but now they know what he looks like!) Born four weeks early at 5 pounds, 5 ounces, William is now at home and doing fine. Mike and Carolyn are also now at home, but slightly bewildered and awed by the whole thing. You may send a note of congratulations to them.
The Landskonnections staff joins the rest of the Fähnlein in sending its sincere good wishes and congratulations to the new parents and baby.
If you need directions to one of our events please e-mail us.
