Bylaws Approved, Officers Elected

The 1995 Annual Meeting of Das TeufelsAlpdrücken Fähnlein was held on Sunday, January 15 (see minutes, below). The highlights of the meeting were the passage of the bylaws, a copy of which is included with this mailing , the decision to incorporate the group as a non-profit entity, and the election of officers. Elected as a slate, the 1995-1996 Board of Director consists of Larry Peterka as CEO, Drew Jones as CFO, and Paula Peterka as CRO. Also elected were the 1995-1996 Field Officers, Larry Peterka as Hauptmann, and Paula Peterka as Hauptfrau. No appointed officers have been selected yet. It is hard to know whether to offer congratulations, or as Larry put it after the elections, ask that "God have mercy on our souls!".

Minutes of Our Last Meeting

Our last meeting was held on January 15, 1995, at the home of Larry & Paula Peterka. Since I have been elected Chief Recording Officer, these are official minutes. Present at the meeting were Mike Amos, Alexis Darnall, Karen Dawson, Janet Gillis, Drew Jones, Victor Nazarian, Larry & Paula Peterka, and Rob Spencer, and new members Kellie Hendley, Brian Langsdorf, and guest Jennifer Lease.

Equipment and kits were discussed. Victor and Larry reported that an old friend and fellow reenactor, Simon Spalding, would be willing to sell us various pieces of equipment that he has in storage. A full inventory and price list has yet to be determined, but it includes a set of 10 pikes, 10 cabaset helmets, and 10 gorgets for $700.00. The storage facility is near Austin, Texas, however, and the group would have to retrieve them itself. Simon will not be returning to the U.S. until early April, and details can be worked out then. This equipment would be of use to us, since it was used to outfit a Landsknecht unit for the Texas Renaissance Fair. We will still need our own gear for the February and March events, however.

Drew reported on a source that he had found for pike poles of tapered ash for $20.00, and broad-leaf pike heads for $40.00. While the unit may buy some for spares, every soldier must have his own pike.

The group once again discussed the benefits of incorporating, and/or going non-profit. It was decided to incorporate as a non-profit group under the provisions of whichever state is the most advantageous. Larry will review appropriate documents from the Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of Maryland, and make a report at the next business meeting.

The Bylaws were then read and approved, section by section. Some typographical errors were corrected, and a few changes were made, as detailed in the new copies being mailed to the membership.

Corporate Officers were then elected. Larry Peterka was nominated for Chief Executive Officer, Drew Jones was nominated for Chief Financial Officer, and Paula Peterka was nominated for Chief Recording Officer. As there were no other nominations, Larry moved that the nominees be voted on as a slate. Karen seconded the motion, and it passed. The slate of officers was then voted on, and was elected, 9-0. Field Officers were then elected. Mike nominated Larry for the office of Hauptmann, and Alexis seconded. Larry nominated Drew for the office of Hauptmann, and Karen seconded. Brian then called for the question, and Larry was elected by a vote of 8-0. Mike nominated Paula for the office of Hauptfrau, and Karen seconded. Paula nominated Karen for the office of Hauptfrau, and Mike seconded. The candidates were then requested to give speeches. Brian called for the question, and Paula was elected by a vote of 7-0. The calendar of upcoming events was discussed, and dates were set for the next few workshops. It was pointed out that the dates for Jamestown are March 18 & 19, not March 25 & 26, as had been previously thought.

The next meeting will be a costume & character workshop, on February 4th, 1995, at Larry & Paula's at 10:00 am.

Germans Sing!

Yet again, in response to requests by the newly elected now-official Hauptmann, Landskonnections is publishing, in both German and English, period and "period-like" Landsknecht songs to sing. This month's selection was chosen because of its length (or lack thereof). I learned it from a german-language tape at the Southern RPF in 1988, and I have nothing on its author, copyright status, or origins.
Wir Sind Deutsch

Wir sind Deutsch,
Deutschland wahr,
Konig in dem England
Für immer Jahr.
Alt. 3rd line:
Konigin in England

Non-singable English Translation:

We are german,
Germany is true,
To the King of England
For many years.
Alt. 3rd line:
To the Queen in England
